How is Remote Medical International's training different?
Our experience providing direct patient-care in wilderness settings is unrivaled in the industry. We train to a high level of proficiency in topics specific to remote environments where access to equipment and outside assistance is limited or unavailable. Our training courses are distinct in several ways:
Unique Approach to Patient Care
We teach a unique assessment-based approach to patient care based on real-life experience in remote medical care. For example, Cardiac Emergencies are typically taught in sections by disease or disorder. The student would learn about Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack), then Angina (Chest Pain), and potentially some other disorders. In a Remote Medical International course, you would first learn how to approach a patient with any type of chest pain, and then learn about proper assessment as well as treatment of individual disorders within the larger picture.
Teaching by this assessment-based approach requires that the instructor have a significant amount of experience dealing with real-life emergencies and it is evident by our experience that students leave our courses with a much more effective system in which to provide care.
Applicable Skills are Covered
We focus on the skills needed to perform in the remote setting with a hands-on approach to learning. You practice with real equipment in realistic situations. Our scenarios and moulage (stage make-up for realistic injury and illness simulation) simulate real world medical situations and the stress involved in them.
We Know How to Educate Adults
We are passionate about medicine and teaching. Our courses are low-stress with an emphasis on real understanding, not note memorization. Teaching methods include interactive lecture and hands-on practice to provide students with the opportunity to master concepts and the confidence to use it in a real setting.
Our Instructors are Experienced Medical Providers
We have a unique breadth and depth of instructor backgrounds combined with advanced training in remote medical care and rescue. Our instructors are all professionally trained and active practitioners who frequently provide medical and rescue support in remote locations. We believe strongly that instructors must have ongoing real-life experience in what they teach. Our medical advisors are active in curriculum development and corporate operations.

Is there a registration deadline for courses?
There is no set registration date for courses. All courses are open until they are filled. While the maximum number of spaces available in a class can vary, we will always guarantee a workable student to instructor ratio.
To be safe and ensure that you receive a spot in one of our courses,
we recommend you register at least one month or more prior to the start date of the course.
If courses fill up, we can place you on our wait-list and give you a call in the chance that a spot opens up.

Can I use financial aid on a course?
Remote Medical International is fully licensed as a Washington State private vocational school. At this time, Remote Medical International does not offer any direct scholarships or tuition assistance. As we are not a Title IV authorized institution, we are unable to accept AmeriCorps Education Awards, the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill and the FAFSA application. However, many of our students have been able to find outside funding to help pay for their courses. Students who are interested in receiving tuition assistance will need to take the initiative themselves to seek out sources for scholarship funding.

How do I recertify my wilderness medicine certification?
Remote Medical International offers reciprocity with other wilderness medicine training companies. You can recertify with us if you took your original course from Wilderness Medical Associates, Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS, Aerie Backcountry Medicine, SOLO, Desert Mountain Medicine, the Wilderness Medicine Treatment Center or others upon pre-approval. Individuals who have been certified by these organizations will receive a card from Remote Medical International upon successful completion of a recertification course.
Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and Wilderness EMT (WEMT) Recertification
The
Wilderness First Responder
and the
Wilderness EMT
certifications are both valid for two years following completion of the course. Students have a year-long grace period after that time in which to recertify. During this time, they are not considered valid providers. Three years after the course, students must take the entire course over again to receive certification.
WFR and WEMT Recertification is typically achieved through a recertification course. We do not allow Wilderness First Responders or Wilderness EMTs to recertify by taking a Wilderness First Aid course. Below are the various options:
Recertification Course with Remote Medical International:
These three-day courses recertify Wilderness First Responders and Wilderness EMTs. Our courses will also recertify CPR for the Healthcare Provider. View our
WFR/WEMT Recertification course schedule
.
Recertification with Other Organizations:
In some cases you may wish to take a course with another organization. Typically, course providers will either directly provide you with a certification from their organization or issue a letter of completion. If you recertify with another organization, Remote Medical International will re-issue your card at no cost to you, assuming Remote Medical recognizes the organization.
EMT-B Recertification
To recertify your National Registry EMT-B students must:
Take a 24-hour refresher course
Complete 48 hours of continuing education
Possess a current CPR certification
Have a 6-month affiliation with an organization providing care at an EMT-B level
These requirements (excluding affiliation) can be met by taking Remote Medical International’s RMUR course. View the
RMUR course schedule.
Please note: Individual states may have different or additional requirements for recertification. Please look on the
National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians
website to find contact information for your State EMS Office and contact them for recertification requirements specific to your state.
CPR Recertification
Students must retake CPR for the Healthcare Provider to recertify. Remote Medical International does not offer stand-alone CPR courses, but CPR is included in our

How do I get from the airport to the course?
RMI offers a shuttle service for students enrolled in our residential courses. This includes our WEMT, RMAP and RMUR courses. The shuttle operates between the
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
and our course facility, either the
Tierra Learning Center
or the
North Cascades Institute
depending on the course.
There is only one shuttle offered each way.
The Student Information Letter will include information about the closing date of shuttle registration, which generally is 5-7 days before a course. After this date space cannot be guaranteed, but interested participants should still call to inquire.
The shuttle will leave the airport sometime between 5 PM and 6 PM the day before the class starts. Your plane needs to arrive in Seattle the day before the course begins no later than 4 PM. For the trip home, we cannot guarantee that the shuttle will leave the course facility any time earlier than 5 PM on the last day of the course. We recommend you either take a red-eye flight the last night of the course or stay in a hotel at the airport and fly out the following morning.
The cost of the shuttle is $60 each way. If you happen to find a ride back to the airport at the end of the class, we are happy to refund your trip one way if you contact us first. Please note that shuttle fees cannot be refunded once the shuttle is booked (usually within 3 days of service).
If you would like to register for the shuttle please contact us
a least one week in advance of the course
at 206-686-4878 or
