RMI’s WEMT course expands upon the standard urban EMT program by including curriculum focused on remote medicine. The WEMT is intended for students who wish to provide EMT level medical care in locations outside the “golden hour.” WEMTs gain additional knowledge of how to care for patients for longer periods of time with limited resources when definitive care is not readily available.
Course Format
The WEMT is a residential course that includes food, lodging, and access to nearby wilderness environments. This course includes lectures, interactive discussions, realistic scenarios, case reviews, practical labs, and clinical rotations in ambulances and/or nearby emergency rooms.
Real World Application
The WEMT certification provides graduates with the skills necessary to qualify for a multitude of professional opportunities. A WEMT is preferred or required in a variety of fields such military and law enforcement, wildland firefighting, search and rescue teams, deployments on commercial vessels and remote clinics, urban ambulance services, ski patrol, National Park jobs, and more.

Certifications Received: EMT from National Registry of EMTs, Wilderness EMT, Medical Person in Charge (MPIC), American Heart Association CPR for the Healthcare Provider
Recertification Interval: 2 years (WEMT, CPR), 5 years (MPIC)
Prerequisites: 18+ years old; ability to lift up to 250 lbs with assistance; high school diploma or equivalent; complete a PPD test at a doctor’s office within six months of the course start date
College Credit: 12 Professional Development Credits
