Remote Medical International's Wilderness EMT course will give you the skills necessary to work in unique environments providing professional medical care. Graduates can utilize their skills in settings such as ski patrol, doing standby rescue at remote locations and businesses, performing medic duties on expeditions, at National Parks, on wildland fire lines, for search and rescue teams, on commercial vessels, or for military operations or urban ambulance services.

Intended Audience The Wilderness EMT course combines the urban EMT-Basic program with the US Coast Guard's Medical Care Person in Charge and Remote Medical's Wilderness EMT curriculum. The course is intended for students who wish to provide EMT-B level medical care in locations that are outside of "the golden hour" associated with urban medical services. WEMTs gain additional knowledge of how to care for a patient for longer periods of time and how to use the resources available to them when an ambulance and/or definitive care are not readily available.

Skills & Topics Taught Unlike many EMT courses which focus heavily on urban care, Remote Medical International courses are taught in wilderness environments and prepare students for making critical decisions when injuries or illnesses occur in remote areas and the hospital is not an option. Course topics include standard EMT skills, patient assessment, splinting, casting, advanced wound care such as stapling and suturing, long-term care, foley catheter insertion, I.V. therapy, airway management, environmental emergencies, medication administration, hygiene, eye emergencies, dental emergencies, as well as specialized rescue, aeromedical evacuation and more. Course Format The WEMT course format is a combination of lecture, realistic scenarios in real-time, and hospital emergency department internships. A typical day begins at eight in the morning with a case review and student taught topics. Throughout the day, the course proceeds with a balance of lecture, interactive discussion, scenarios, real case reviews, and practical labs. A large portion of the course is spent in the field performing real-time rescues with interactive simulators, which provides students with opportunity to train in the most realistic settings possible.

Textbooks Students have the option to receive their textbooks in advance of a course, but it is not required. For the WEMT course we use Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, 10th Edition, AAOS, Field Guide to Wilderness Medicine, 3rd Edition, Auerbach, and Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, American Heart Association. Please contact us if you would like us to ship your textbooks out to you before the course begins. There is no additional fee if shipping is within the United States.

Instructors The Wilderness EMT program at Remote Medical International is taught by experienced Remote Site Care Providers with Wilderness EMTs, Critical Care Nurses, Paramedics, and Emergency Physicians as guest lecturers.
