Many of you know Melissa Arnot, a wilderness medicine instructor here as well as Himalayan climber and guide. We were saddened yesterday to learn that her climbing partner, Chhewang Nima Sherpa, was killed while climbing with her in Nepal. Please read the below statement from Melissa and consider donating to the fund set up by Alpine Ascents International. Thank you.

On October 23rd while climbing on Barunste, a peak in the Nepal Himalaya, my climbing partner Chhewang Nima Sherpa was killed by an ice collapse and avalanche.  This was a tragic and unpredictable accident.  I loved Chhewang and he is greatly missed by anyone who had the chance to know him.  He was the sole supporter of his wife and two children, as well as 8 brothers and sisters whom he helped support.  I am committed to helping the family in any way that I can financially.  If you are interested in making any contribution to a fund for his children I ask you to please do so.  Even a very small amount of money helps and is appreciated.  Chhewang had summited Everest 19 times and was a Sherpa celebrity, mostly because of his humble attitude and kind approach towards all people.  Any help you can consider giving would be greatly appreciated.

Alpine Ascents International, the guiding company Chhewang worked closely with in the States, has set up a checking account for donations to Chhewang Nima’s family. Checks can be made payable to: “FBO Chhewang Nima Sherpa” and mailed to:

Chhewang Nima Sherpa was a close friend of Melissa’s and a regular climbing partner of hers in Nepal.  He was with her when she summited Everest in 2008, and Ama Dublam in 2009.  He was also with Jeff Dossett, RMI Board Member, on his 2004 and 2008 summits of Everest.
